2006 Bjornstad Chardonnay, Sonoma County

This is a great introduction to the fantastic wines of Bjornstad, a Pinot Noir/Chardonnay expert that makes several vineyard designates from select vineyards (Ritchie, Hellenthal, more). The Kitchen is featuring this Chardonnay with the Barbecued Maine Lobster Mac and Cheese dish. Using native yeasts and partial oak to make his minimal intervention wines, Greg Bjornstad is a winemaker to know.

2006 Renard Roussanne, Westerly Vineyard, Santa Barbara
This Syrah specialist first fell in love with the wines of the Rhone while working with some of the finest Winemakers in the Rhone Valley. This Roussanne comes from one of Santa Ynez' coolest vineyard sites and yields a fine example of this varietal - pears, apples, butterscotch with a lively acidity. Doug at the Kitchen, has chosen this wine to pair with the 'Katsuo' Tuna on a Bed of Virginia Sea Scallop Medallions. He concurs with the winemaker, it is "what Chardonnay wishes it could be."

2005 Winterhawk Merlot, Suisun Valley
It was a revelation to discover that fantastic wines are being made directly between the Bay Area and Sacramento (right off I-80). Since the mid-1800's vineyards have thrived in Suisun (a Native American word meaning West Wind) Valley, and Winterhawk took over previously planted vineyards in 1977. While all their wines were impressive, their award-winning Merlot proved to be an extraordinary wine and a great value - rich, nice fruit, great balance and a wonderful finish. Each wine bears a picture of the birds of prey that (organically) protect the vineyards from mischievous rodents.

2005 Obsidian Hills Cabernet Sauvignon, Red Hills, Lake County
Doug says, "the best two words to describe this stunning wine are rich and opulent." This is the wine that he chose to pair with the Pure Black Angus Beef and Hand-Foraged Chanterelle Mushrooms - another stunning example of the wines that are coming out of Lake County. "It has a soft but full, lush mouth feel with vanilla, black cherry, milk chocolate, soft-ripe tannins, and great acidity on finish."

2006 Peter Franus Zinfandel, Napa Valley
Artisan Zinfandel winemaker, Peter Franus, first fell in love with our heritage grape almost 25 years ago. Since then, he has become recognized by R Parker and Wine Spectator for his style and consistency through the years. Taking grapes from heralded vineyards in Napa Valley (particularly Mt. Veeder) and Rancho Chimiles, Franus (who lives in Sacramento), again makes a lovely Zin with big berry fruit and wonderful spice (and everything nice).
