September 2008 Wine Flight

- First Course -

Goat Cheese Gnocchi withy Crispy Potato,
Braised Baby Shitake Mushrooms, Parmesan,
Squash Blossoms and Black Truffle

to be paired with

2007 Neal Family Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley
$10.00/glass - $34.00/bottle

In 2008, Neal Family Vineyards introduced its first Sauvignon Blanc with the 2007 vintage. Winemaker notes on the Neal Family website tell us the following: “Organically grown fruit from the lower slopes of Howell Mountain have provided a delicious combination of classic Sauvignon Blanc fruit characters as well as hint of very ripe tropical flavors. Intense aromas include pure Sauvignon Blanc fruit, floral blossoms and pineapple-guava characters. First impressions in the mouth are of citrus: grapefruit and Meyer lemon-Kaffir lime. After the initial impact of a bright and lively mouthfeel, more of the tropical flavors appear, including passion fruit and pineapple. The finish has a slight creamy texture, creating a great long finish and pleasant aftertaste.” Doug concurs, adding these flavor profiles: On the nose: lime, kaffir lime leaves, CITRUS RIND. On the palate: very dry entry, soft mid palate, tangy finish, green kumquat and lime, gravel. This wine is crisp and refreshing and is lovely on its own to enjoy before the show, but also delights the palate by cleaning up after the rich and creamy gnocchi with its fresh and vibrant acidity. This wine is a winner all around.

- Second Course -

Corn and Walla Walla Onion Chowder with
Maine Lobster Fritters, Walnut-Vanilla Bean Cream,
and Parsley-Shiso Mash

to be paired with

2006 Ojai Chardonnay, Solomon Hills Vineyard,
Santa Maria Valley
$15.00/glass - $52.00/bottle

Gorgeous aromas of apples and smoke with a palate of crisp minerality, cinnamon and white pepper spice. This brilliant and unique wine has a tangy acidity on the finish with a lightly viscous feel. Spicy orchard and pit fruit aromas are brightened by lemon zest and dusty minerals. These grapes are all Dijon clones, which proprietor Adam Tolmach believes "work great if the spot is cool enough.” And this vineyard is just right. Doug chose this delicious Chardonnay to pair with the creamy sweetness of our corn and onion chowder. The depth of the wine compliments the silky soup while its brightness and pepper qualities play off the sweetness to lovely effect and the refreshing acidity cleans it all up nicely.

- Sushi - Sashimi - Crudo -

- Third Course -

Slow Roasted Liberty Duck Breast and Guinea Hen Cannelloni
with Parma-Prosciutto, Natural Pan Juices, Thyme,
Chili Oil and a Small Salad

to be paired with

2007 Innocent Bystander Pinot Noir, Yarra Valley, Australia
$14.00/glass - $45.00/bottle

Doug picked this great newer Pinot called Innocent Bystander to pair seamlessly with our lovely, earthy poultry dish. One of the few wines we source from down under, this new 2007 will not disappoint. This is a fairly big and lush Pinot, showing more black cherry, chocolate, earth and mineral notes. On the palate, the wine is rich with very good structure and a persistent finish. Winemaker notes from their website say the Innocent Bystander will stand up to duck or grilled quail beautifully. With a velvety mouthfeel and plush tannins, Doug also finds the following touches in this stunner of a Pinot: cola, blueberry, strawberry, mild smoke, cedar, and pastry. Sounds delectable.

- Fourth Course -

Free Range Lavender Scented Grilled Bison with
a Salsa of Virginia Sea Scallops and Heirloom Tomatoes,
Homemade Bacon Infused Cabernet and
Argentine Chimichurri

to be paired with

2005 Serdonis Cabernet Sauvignon , Howell Mountain,
Napa Valley

$18.00 glass / $72.00 bottle

Deep and juicy, the nose of this fine new Cabernet showcases aromas of dark cherry and Cassis, supported by layers of savory spices that include black tea, toast, tobacco, and forest floor scents. It proves bright, youthful and richly fruity in the mouth, with palate-coating currant, cherry, toast and earth flavors that linger beautifully through a supple finish. Serdonis is a classic, hand-crafted Cabernet Sauvignon wine that comes from Howell Mountain of Napa Valley. Latin for hand-worker, the name Serdonis reflects their uncompromising and handcrafted winemaking methods. The production is small, 600 cases, which allows them to give great attention and care to the creation of Serdonis. This is a gorgeous Cab that is perfect for lovers of big, juicy reds while still boasting a backbone of vibrant acidity that goes perfectly with the bison and does not overpower the scallops or tomatoes.

- Dessert Course -

Milk Chocolate-Brioche Bread Pudding, Yellow Peach Ice Cream,
Britni’s Bittersweet Chocolate-Chocolate Chip Cookies,
Chocolate-Espresso Jus and Peppermint Extract

to be paired with

MV Quinta do Noval "Vintage Character" LBV Port

$12.00 glass/ $40.00 bottle

This divine dessert is sublimely paired with a deep and opulent Port to bring your evening to a picture perfect finish. This wine earned 91 points from Robert Parker, and with only 300 cases produced, it is in very high demand worldwide. We bring you the Quinta do Noval in all its glory, with fabulous fruit, and that wonderful spice and smoky chocolate character found in quality port.
